January 27, 2009today i signed up for a series of psychological studies that i must take in order to receive full credit for my psych 301: introduction to psychology course. i don’t really mind, because i like filling out pointless surveys and being subjected to strange and mentally scarring tests. i aspire to someday utilize this talent in order to earn cash money as opposed to what i will earn for this, five credit hours, the monetary equivalent of $.01. touche.
interestingly enough, a portion of the ’pre-screening questions’ asked things that called into question the validity of said testing, namely, “if you walked into a room and there was a tarantula in a cage, how would you feel about removing the cage lid and touching the tarantula?”
D. Strong Aversion Against. (for now, but who knows what the year of the ox will hold).
ps: after re-reading this post, i’m beginning to think i do need psychological testing.

January 22, 2009after reading this and this, i’ve felt inspired to write an equally moving and emotional open letter to either bobby, our neighbor who feels empowered by revving his motorcycle engine for thirty minutes in the wee hours of the morn, OR possibly to sabra lemon hummus, OR to my new shoes, which made my feet start bleeding yesterday while i walked to school, subsequently causing me to arrive at my first class, J 315: “Newspaper Writing and Editing”, in a medium-sized pool of blood.

January 19, 2009today i dined at casa de luz and i’ve never in my life been so ecstatic about lentils. tonight’s menu included: lentils (pureed, tasted like potatoes (?), grade of A), warm carrot/radish/corn salad (surprise hit, A+), short-grain brown rice (rice, B+) with nori “topping” (foul, F), blanched greens with cilantro-almond sauce (divine, A+), and some sort of sauerkraut (pickly, B-). the ambiance was very pleasant. i also bought a small wooden spoon that i know will be utilized in potential breakfast combinations.
also, this makes me reevaluate my negative assessment of noah baumbach’s ’the squid and the whale.’

January 16, 2009i’m trying to compile a list of valuable things i’ve gained over the last month, but mostly i’ve been doing tons of nothing. really, the best things i can think of so far are my discovery of medjool dates, “mary” (minute 6:14) by N&TW on repeat, and thinking about this:

prada art installation. marfa, texas. photo from domino magazine.
will update if i think of anything more exotic and/or compelling to add.

January 11, 2009i canNOT stop thinking about Teen Witch lately. Teen Witch was a 1980’s teen movie/musical (?) that i was in love with at the age of 9. over the past few weeks, Teen Witch has reappeared in my life due to its appearance on 30 rock and through the re-discovery of this gem on youtube when i, for reasons unknown, could not get “top that” out of my head last week.
ps: austin hipster boys wear the same outfits as the gentlemen in this video.

January 9, 2009back ache ‘08 has officially evolved into head cold ‘09. i’m sick and whiny, but i won’t drag this out.
dallas, tx metroplex round-up.
1. the dallas museum of art. review: so-so. the current crowd pleaser was the king tut exhibition, or a ‘lord of the rings’ of sorts in the museum circuit. we opted out, since the exhibition cost $30 (?!). so pre-recession. however, the other reject exhibition turned out to be amazing. the olafur eliasson installations were worth the $5 student ticket and $15 parking permit (!) plus, i learned from eliasson’s wikipedia page that he used to be the “break-dancing champion of Scandinavia.”

kaleidoscope installation at eliasson's "take your time." dallas museum of art.
2. the modern. ft worth, tx. review: beauty. we got a half-price ticket because they were de-installing the current exhibition, but the permanent collection was wonderful and the building itself was stunning.

- The Modern. Ft Worth, Texas.

- Twenty-Five Colored Marilyns by Andy Warhol. Ft. Worth Modern.
3. the greater grapevine/colleyville area (“GVCV”) oh grapevine.
