halloween, pt.2

October 31, 2008

I’ve already seen approximately 15 people wearing cat ears today, and it’s only 4:35 pm.

It’s disconcerting. Meow.

Quotes of the day, just to get you thinking:

“I was having a dream where I was making a soft serve ice cream cone and I made the cone and it was perfect and I was just about to lick it and then you woke me up.”-Sarah Gentry, Today, 8:00 AM.

And, just read this gem, “Minutes prior to the commencement of Sonia Rykiel’s 40th anniversary show in Paris earlier this month, one dresser projectile vomited over three models.  Some time was reportedly spent fishing particles out of the models’ hair and clothes.” (Courtesy of Refinery29).

Yesterday my grandmother mailed me a Halloween card with 1 stick of berry-flavored gum taped inside.

I really thought that “running out of hot water” was a myth–that it had been phased out by human evolution or something. Then again, I also thought humanity had accepted that different forms of the word “there” exist, and that theory was proven wrong to me just yesterday.

I never shower in the morning because my hair takes approximately 5 hours to dry. I also don’t like having clean hair because it’s too silky and my bangs get weird and wispy. But that says more about my levels of personal hygiene than I wish to divulge. However, this morning I was cold because our house, quaint as it may be, does not insulate. I took a shower to stop being cold but then whilst I was in the shower the water turned cold and I was still cold. This is a great story.

PS: How do you hard-boil an egg? Yesterday I tried and failed. They won’t peel.

Though I may have written this, don’t worry because apparently Almond Breeze is back on the shelves.

gee wiz, life is so stressful right now. seriously, i haven’t had enough time to breathe or take my calcium supplements. and my google reader is out of control! my life is completely organized by google, which is cool and scary. google could start charging membership fees.  !  i would be the first to pay for my email/reader/calendar/documents/life.

about 6 days ago i cooked. though this is so long ago and totally insignificant now, it was such a rare spontaneous moment that i thought it should be noted [for documenting purposes]. i made Lemon Chickpea Stirfry from 101 Cookbooks. divine!

so far this weekend’s plans include: work/write a paper/eat pudding cups. tgif!

I regret my decision to take “Food and Culture” when the student who is “guest-teaching” our class tells us to refer to Wikipedia if we have any questions.

PS Fact of the Day: Did you know chapstick has an expiration date?

I rarely watch television. I think this is because last year my roommate brought the TV to our dorm room and plugged it in on her side of the room, subsequently subjecting me to 9+ hours per day of MTV “Rock of Love” marathons (we had an equivocal relationship fyi!). As a result, I learned to block out the TV anytime it’s on. Since I’ve moved, I’ve probably watched a total of 2 hours of television in the past 2 months.

However, this afternoon I was feeling spontaneous and watched:

-1/2 of an E! True Hollywood Special: Full House

-15 minutes of Gilmore Girls, Season 4 (?)

-The Tyra Banks Show

-ABC news at 6:00 (local)

What a night!

Sometimes on Tuesdays, I deem it appropriate to spend 4 hours baking mini-cupcakes with the purpose of constructing a giant American flag. The things I do for election season!

I’m sad to report that I feel like I’ve been neglecting this blog lately. However, other pressing issues seem to have taken priority in these past few weeks.

I’ve realized the error of my ways: clearly, this blog is where my loyalty lies. I’ve forgotten all of my other frivolous activities (work, shmerk) to return to (hopefully) more regular posts. It’s just like when I was in 3rd grade and I tried to replace my old faithful American girl doll (Samantha) with a shiny new Magic Attic doll (Heather). However, I quickly realized my mistake: Heather was lame, wearing pink overalls, and didn’t have soft hair. I promply reverted back to Samantha. In other words, what’s old is new again! When all else fails, spend 3+ hours on the internet!

For unexpected reasons, this week I have had to spend more time than usual in RLM auditoriums. It’s unpleasant–that building smells bad and I feel like it’s constructed out of cardboard, ready to collapse if I slam the door of the bathroom stall too hard.

The most devastating part of the RLM experience is getting off the escalator. Without fail, I’m filled with a feeling of panic at the moment when a crowd of people is piling off the escalators onto a very small platform. Common sense says, this is not possible, yet somehow, veryone always manages to get off before a pile-up ensues. It’s terrifying. Monday, as I left RLM, I was in such a state of confusion that I almost bought one of the tiger-tail donuts that the biology club sells in the lobby for $.50 each. When I was younger, my grandmother would take me to Handy Andy and let me purchase one tiger-tail donut as I sat in the grocery cart and watched her buy containers of cottage cheese.

I skipped class on Wednesday.

weekend round-up

October 6, 2008

I think I’ll recap fri-sun in my favorite way, list form.

1. Living Room Painting: The Experiment. 3.5 coats of paint, $100.00, my hands/feet covered in enamel, minimal brain damage from inhaling paint fumes in a closed room. That was the price I paid to now sit in an eggplant-colored living room.

2. I spent $10.00 on apples at Central Market. Typically I would feel guilty, but I’d sell my firstborn for a honeycrisp.

3. Austin, TX television is now without NBC. I’m not really sure how and/or if this will affect my life, but I just found it interesting that I am capable of watching Lifetime, E!, and Oxygen if I so choose  (none of which should be viewed), yet I cannot watch NBC anywhere in the greater 512 area. Just an observation.

4. An acorn squash, +/- 200 “candid” photos, Isenberg: The Dinner Party.

5. Edited to add: a l.i.m.e. study party, in which I ate one (1) banana-walnut mini muffin. It was fantastic.

Food Product Recommendation of the Week:

Yesterday in an attempt to make my plain yogurt more appetizing, I mixed in some Aunt Jemima light (oxymoron?) maple syrup. The things I do for calcium. But it was very good–try it.

and ps, For Hal and/or Kevin:

Leigh’s Reasons to Get Married:

1. I can’t think of anything besides inheritance.

My eyes have been itchy-burning for going on 11 hours. Perhaps this is a warning that I am spending too much of my precious time on the internet. I’ve realized that the moments I will be alive are being ticked off, and I’m watching it all happen through pixelated glasses. I’ve also realized that I think I’m failing some of my classes.

I think I need to do something about this. It’s an addiction. Maybe even more so than Chai Tea LUNA bars and/or Central Market Organics brand peanut butter. I can go maybe 2 hours without checking my email before I start to get pretty antsy. And I have to consistently stay caught up on my Google Reader or else…I don’t know what will happen BUT is that so wrong? Really, I’m just a modern girl.
